QUESTION:
Why memorize a bunch of boring facts? I can quickly find what I need to
know with Google!
ANSWER:
Keeping valuable information in our permanent memory is more than just cramming
data into our brains.
First, as a practical matter we often don't have the time to look things
up. If we don't know immediately, it may be too late. An obvious
example is speaking to someone in a language you don't know. Your partner
would need a unusual amount of patience to wait for you to look up each word.
Second, and perhaps most importantly, when we have information readily in mind,
the way we think about that information changes. Patterns and
relationships become more readily apparent to us, and we understand more
deeply. We not only remember more, but are able to think more
effectively.
Third, as we go on our learning adventure, you will be asking yourself "what is
valuable enough for me to remember?" Just as a photographer or painter
looks at the world with more awareness than others, you will look at
information with a sharper mind. This alone will make you better able to
remember and think clearly.
Fourth, we will be exercising your mind, with improved mental abilities being
the natural result. You brain will instinctively look forward to time
spent with me learning and reviewing. Our time together can be a valuable
type of meditation, where your mind is concentrating on recall and leaving
other worries behind.
Fifth, this will become increasingly enjoyable. Each step of the way you
will take pride and satisfaction in productively managing your memory, reaching
your goals step-by-step. This is not a monotonous process, but an
adventure in learning with growth and experiences beyond what we can imagine.
